5 Questions with Chef Nikki Shaw
Celebrity Chef NIKKI SHAW is a minority partner for the restaurants and concessions at Oakland International Airport as well as a trained media spokesperson specializing in recipe development and product endorsement for major corporations. Chef Nikki has been a featured chef with the Oakland A's and the Golden State Warriors as well as the American Diabetes Association and Kaiser Permanente as a media spokesperson advocating for healthy eating and heart disease prevention. A finalist on Food Network's The Next Food Network Star, Chef Nikki graduated from both Howard University and Southeastern Culinary Academy. She and her husband, former NBA player Brian Shaw, live together right here in the Bay with their children.
BFiO: Whose food in Oakland do you enjoy as much as your own?
BFiO: What food do you think is overrated?
CHEF NIKKI: For some reason, I will never understand how some people absolutely love RAW OYSTERS!
BFiO: What’s missing in the Oakland food scene?
CHEF NIKKI: I would really like to see more healthy options in Oakland. Sometimes I just want something fast that’s also good for me.
BFiO: At what local markets do you shop for ingredients/food?
CHEF NIKKI: I absolutely LOVE strolling through our local Oakland farmers markets with my family. I find super fresh and healthy produce, as well as GREAT food from pop-up restaurants and trucks.
BFiO: What does The New Normal look like for Oakland restaurants & food businesses in the age of COVID-19?
CHEF NIKKI: We are definitely going to have to make some major changes in terms of social distancing and sanitizing. I certainly do enjoy eating outside, as long as the weather cooperates.
